Section 1 — About the Technology

What is a vertical axis wind turbine, and how is it different from a conventional wind turbine?

A conventional wind turbine — the kind you see in large wind farms — has blades that spin around a horizontal axis, like an aircraft propeller. It must rotate to face into the wind and needs relatively steady, unobstructed airflow to operate efficiently.

A vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) spins around a vertical axis, like a top. The blades rotate regardless of which direction the wind comes from, so no yaw mechanism is needed. This makes VAWTs particularly well suited to turbulent, multi-directional wind environments — exactly the conditions found on rooftops, in urban settings, and on exposed farmsteads where wind direction changes frequently.

Why choose a VAWT over a conventional horizontal axis turbine?

For the right site, a VAWT offers several genuine advantages.

Works in turbulent wind. Urban rooftops, complex terrain, and farm buildings all create swirling, multi-directional airflow. Conventional turbines lose efficiency in these conditions. VAWTs do not require clean laminar flow and continue generating in conditions that would stop a horizontal-axis turbine from performing well.

No yaw mechanism. Because a VAWT responds to wind from any direction, there is no need for the mechanical yaw system that turns a conventional turbine to face the wind. This reduces mechanical complexity, lowers maintenance requirements, and removes a significant failure point.

Lower noise. HNordic turbines produce 35 dB @ 3 m — quieter than a normal conversation. This makes them suitable for installation near occupied buildings, residential areas, and public spaces where a conventional turbine would not be permitted.

Bird and bat safety. The slower blade tip speed of a VAWT significantly reduces collision risk compared to the high-speed blade tips of horizontal-axis turbines. HNordic turbines rotate at 0–550 RPM with a rotor diameter of 1.6 m, making them far less hazardous to wildlife.

Aesthetic integration. The cylindrical rotating form of a VAWT is visually compact and architecturally coherent. It can be sited on a rooftop or mounted on a lattice mast without dominating the landscape.

What wind speeds do HNordic turbines need to operate?

The WindWhisperer 100 Max cuts in at 2.2 m/s — a very light breeze. This is significantly lower than most conventional small wind turbines, which typically require 3.0–4.0 m/s to begin generating. Low cut-in speed means the turbine starts producing earlier in the day, operates during calm periods that would leave other turbines idle, and contributes to a flatter, more consistent energy curve across the year.

How loud is a HNordic turbine?

How long will the turbine last?

What certifications do HNordic turbines hold?

HNordic turbines are certified to IEC/EN 62477 · EN/IEC 61000. The turbine carries IEC II classification, suitable for sites with mean wind speeds up to 8.5 m/s.

Grid connection standards supported: EN-50549-1 (Sweden/EU), G99 (UK), AS/NZS4777 (Australia/NZ), VDE 4105 (Germany), CEI-016 / CEI-021 (Italy), NRS097 (South Africa), C10/100 (Belgium).

Are vertical axis wind turbines safe for birds and bats?

Yes -- and significantly safer than conventional horizontal-axis turbines. The primary risk factor for bird and bat collision in wind turbines is blade tip speed. Large HAWTs have blade tips travelling at 70 metres per second or more, sweeping a large circular area that is difficult for birds and bats to detect and avoid in time.

The WindWhisperer rotor is 1.6 m in diameter and rotates at a maximum of 0–550 RPM. Blade tip speeds are a fraction of those on large machines. The compact, vertically contained rotor is also easier for wildlife to perceive and avoid than the near-invisible disc swept by a fast HAWT.

In the UK, Natural England's standing advice on protected species applies to wind turbine planning applications. The lower tip speed and small swept area of a VAWT are directly relevant to bat collision risk assessments, and typically result in a less onerous ecology requirement than for large horizontal-axis machines.

Does a vertical axis wind turbine affect radar or telecommunications?

The WindWhisperer's compact aluminium rotor -- 1.6 m diameter, 4.4 m tall -- presents a minimal radar cross-section compared to large horizontal-axis turbines with blades spanning 50--100 metres. Radar interference and telecommunications impact are assessed as part of the planning process for any wind turbine installation. Section 2 — Products & Specifications

What models are available?

HNordic offers two generator platforms — 100 kW and 50 kW — each in three configurations (base, Max, and Ultra). See the 100 kW product page and 50 kW product page for full specifications and power curves.

What does the rotor speed range of 0–550 RPM mean in practice?

The turbine scales its rotation speed with available wind — starting slowly in light breeze and increasing as wind strengthens, up to a maximum of 0–550 RPM. This variable-speed operation, managed by the 18 Phase DC generator and power electronics, allows efficient energy capture across a wide range of wind conditions rather than only at a narrow rated speed. It also contributes to the low noise profile and low wildlife impact at typical operating speeds.

Can multiple turbines be installed together?

Yes. Multiple units can be installed on the same rooftop or mast cluster to increase total generating capacity. Wind directors — additional deflector structures — can also be fitted to increase the energy capture of each turbine by channelling airflow into the rotor more effectively. Can the turbine integrate with solar panels and battery storage?

Yes. Every HNordic installation includes battery storage as standard — 430 kWh LFP for the 100 kW platform and 215 kWh LFP for the 50 kW platform. This is not an optional add-on; it is central to how the system performs.

HNordic turbines are also compatible with solar PV integration. Wind and solar are naturally complementary: solar produces most during calm summer days; wind typically strengthens during winter, at night, and in overcast conditions.

How do I choose between the 50 kW and 100 kW platforms?

The right generator size depends primarily on your annual electricity consumption and your site's available space and wind resource.

A single WindWhisperer 100 Max generating ~230 MWh per year is well matched to commercial premises, farms, or industrial sites consuming roughly 200--400 MWh annually -- a medium-sized logistics unit, a working arable farm, or a light manufacturing facility, for example. The 50 kW platform at ~115 MWh suits smaller commercial buildings, retail units, or rural properties with more modest consumption.

As a starting point: if your annual electricity bill is above £40,000--£50,000 (or equivalent in SEK), the 100 kW platform is likely the better fit. Below that, the 50 kW range is worth considering first. A site assessment will give you a specific recommendation based on your actual consumption profile and wind resource. Can I add a second turbine later if my energy needs grow?

Yes. Multiple WindWhisperer units can be installed on the same rooftop or site. If your energy consumption increases -- through business growth, EV charging, or electrification of heating -- adding a second turbine is a straightforward option, subject to structural capacity and grid connection headroom. It is worth discussing future expansion with your installer at the design stage so the grid connection and battery storage are sized to accommodate it.

What does "self-limiting by design" actually mean -- is it not just a brake?

No -- it is a fundamentally different mechanism. A brake is active: it is applied in response to over-speed and involves mechanical friction or electrical load dumping. The WindWhisperer's self-limiting behaviour is passive and geometric: as wind speed rises beyond the rated range, the aerodynamic forces on the blades change in a way that naturally reduces the net driving torque on the rotor. The rotor does not need to be stopped -- it finds its own equilibrium. No brake engages, no controller intervenes, no components wear. This is why the turbine can maintain rated output continuously through storms rather than shutting down and restarting.

Section 3 — Installation & Siting

Where can a HNordic turbine be installed?

HNordic turbines are designed for two primary installation types.

Flat rooftop. The compact footprint (1.6 m diameter) and vertical form factor make the turbine well suited to commercial and industrial rooftops. The low noise level (35 dB @ 3 m) and contained rotor make rooftop installation feasible in environments where a horizontal-axis turbine would not be permitted.

Lattice mast. For ground-level or rural installations, a lattice mast raises the turbine to optimum height above local obstructions. Mast height options and foundation types are selected based on site-specific structural assessment.

Do I need planning permission?

In the UK, commercial wind turbines require full planning permission -- permitted development does not apply. In Sweden, installations above certain sizes require a bygglov and in some cases environmental notification. Requirements in Norway, Denmark, and Finland vary. What foundation options are available?

For lattice mast installations, foundation options include:

For rooftop installations, the turbine is fixed to the building structure via a purpose-designed base frame. Structural assessment of the roof is included in the installation process.

How long does installation take?

From contract signature to full grid production takes 16 weeks. The turbine is physically mounted and commissioned in weeks 6–10; the remaining time covers planning applications, grid connection approval, and the grid owner's final on-site inspection. Can I install it myself?

No. All HNordic turbines are installed exclusively by qualified, certified third-party installers. This ensures the turbine is commissioned correctly, grid connection is handled to the required standard, and the installation meets local regulatory and safety requirements. Your installer will also be your primary point of contact for ongoing maintenance.

What structural load does the turbine place on a rooftop?

The WindWhisperer 100 Max weighs 650 kg and the 50 base model weighs 325 kg. For rooftop installations, a structural assessment of the building is carried out as part of the installation process -- this is not an optional extra but a standard step. The assessment confirms whether the roof structure can support the static weight of the turbine plus the dynamic loads it generates in operation, and determines the base frame fixing specification.

Most modern commercial flat roofs built to standard construction specifications can accommodate the WindWhisperer without modification. Older buildings or those with specific structural constraints are assessed individually. If a rooftop installation is not viable, a ground-level lattice mast installation is an alternative for sites with suitable outdoor space.

I do not own the building -- can I still install a turbine?

This depends on your lease terms and your landlord's position. As a tenant, you will generally need the freeholder's written consent for any installation that modifies the building structure or roof. In the UK, many commercial leases contain alterations clauses that require landlord approval -- your solicitor can advise on the specific wording in your lease.

The economics often work well as a landlord--tenant arrangement: the tenant funds the installation and benefits from lower energy bills; the landlord gains an asset that improves the building's EPC rating and energy credentials. I already have solar panels -- can I add a WindWhisperer to my existing system?

Yes, and this is one of the most effective configurations. A WindWhisperer added to an existing solar and battery installation fills the gaps that solar cannot cover -- winter months, overnight periods, and overcast days when solar output is low but wind is often strongest.

The key technical question is whether your existing battery storage and inverter system can accept an additional AC or DC generation source. In most cases, AC coupling is the simplest route: the WindWhisperer connects to your existing AC distribution at the point of connection, alongside your solar inverter output. Your installer will assess compatibility with your existing system at the site assessment stage.

If your existing battery system is from a third-party supplier, HNordic's storage can be added in parallel, or the turbine output can be directed into your existing battery via AC coupling. How does battery storage affect the economics?

Battery storage is included as standard in every HNordic installation. Storage enables:

Can I claim capital allowances or tax relief on the installation?

In the UK, wind turbines and battery storage systems used for business purposes typically qualify as plant and machinery for capital allowances purposes. Under the Annual Investment Allowance (AIA), businesses can deduct the full cost of qualifying plant and machinery from profits in the year of purchase, up to the current AIA limit. As of 2025, the AIA limit is £1 million per year -- well above the cost of a single turbine installation for most businesses.

Full expensing, introduced in the 2023 UK Budget, also allows companies subject to corporation tax to deduct 100% of qualifying expenditure in the year it is incurred, with no upper limit. This significantly improves the first-year economics of a commercial wind installation.

Does a wind turbine improve my building's EPC rating?

Yes -- in the UK, on-site renewable electricity generation is a direct input to the Energy Performance Certificate calculation methodology. A WindWhisperer installation generating ~230 MWh reduces the modelled net energy import of the building, which improves the asset rating. For commercial properties, EPC ratings affect lease terms, mortgage eligibility, and in some cases regulatory compliance under MEES (Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards) requirements. Are there government grants or subsidies available?

UK: The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) requires licensed electricity suppliers to offer export tariffs to small generators, including wind. How much maintenance does a VAWT require?

Vertical axis turbines have fewer mechanical components than horizontal axis turbines — no yaw system, no pitch control mechanism, and a simpler drivetrain. This translates to lower maintenance frequency and fewer parts to replace over the turbine's 20 years service life.

All HNordic turbines are installed by certified third-party installers, who typically hold the ongoing maintenance contract for the system they commission.

What happens in very strong winds or storms?

Nothing -- the turbine keeps generating. The WindWhisperer has no cut-out wind speed. The rotor geometry is self-limiting by design: as wind speed rises beyond the rated range, aerodynamic forces naturally reduce driving torque without any brake or software intervention. Conventional turbines shut down above ~25 m/s and produce nothing; the WindWhisperer maintains full rated output continuously.

Is remote monitoring available?

Yes. Every WindWhisperer includes EcoHub -- HNordic's AI-managed monitoring platform. EcoHub tracks generation, battery level, property consumption, and grid import/export in real time via a web dashboard (mobile app in development). The AI layer monitors day-ahead electricity prices and weather data to optimise when your system charges and exports. What happens at end of life?

The aluminium rotor and structural components are fully recyclable. The lithium battery storage system is subject to manufacturer take-back and recycling obligations in all markets where HNordic operates.

What happens if my installer ceases trading?

The installer holds your maintenance contract, so this is a legitimate question to ask before committing. HNordic maintains a network of certified installers and, in the event that your original installer is no longer able to service your installation, we will connect you with another certified partner who can take over the maintenance relationship. Does the installation affect my building or property insurance?

Any material change to a building -- including the addition of plant and machinery on the roof or structure -- should be declared to your insurer. In most cases, a commercial wind turbine installation is treated as additional plant and machinery and covered under your existing commercial property policy, subject to notification. Some insurers may apply an additional premium; others treat it as standard improvement to the asset. You should notify your insurer before installation and obtain written confirmation of continued cover.
