Monitoring & tracking

How do I monitor and track my wind turbine generation?

Every WindWhisperer includes EcoHub -- HNordic's AI-managed energy monitoring and optimisation platform. EcoHub is not just a read-only dashboard: it actively manages your system, trades energy against day-ahead electricity prices, and alerts you to faults in real time. Access is via web browser; a mobile app is in development.

EcoHub: what is included

EcoHub is HNordic's proprietary platform, included as standard with every WindWhisperer installation. It combines monitoring, AI-driven optimisation, and fault alerting in a single system.

Web dashboard

The EcoHub web dashboard gives you a full view of your installation:

AI management

EcoHub's AI layer runs continuously in the background. It takes day-ahead electricity price data and local weather forecasts as inputs, then optimises when to charge the battery, when to export to the grid, and when to draw from storage -- without any manual input from you.

Alerts

EcoHub sends automatic alerts for:

Alerts are delivered via the web dashboard and, once the mobile app is available, push notifications.

Mobile app

A mobile app is currently in development. Until it is available, all EcoHub functions are accessible via the web dashboard on any device including smartphones.

Monitoring data: what you see

Real-time dashboard

At any moment, you can see:

This view updates every 5–10 seconds, showing the live interplay between generation, battery, consumption, and grid.

Hourly and daily views

Charts show generation and consumption over the past 24 hours, the past week, or the past month. Typical patterns emerge:

This helps you understand if you are wasting wind generation or if your consumption is well-aligned with wind patterns.

Monthly and annual views

Cumulative dashboards show:

These views are valuable for tax purposes, insurance claims, and validating that your system is performing as expected.

Performance tracking and diagnostics

Expected generation vs. actual

The monitoring system compares actual generation against a baseline prediction (based on wind class, local terrain, and seasonal patterns). If actual is consistently below expected, this flags a problem — perhaps a fault in the turbine, a blade issue, or unexpectedly sheltered wind patterns.

Efficiency metrics

Inverter efficiency, battery round-trip efficiency, and system uptime are logged. Typical uptime for a well-maintained system is 95%+. If uptime drops below 90%, it suggests a fault requiring investigation.

Component health

Inverter, battery, and turbine controllers all log diagnostic codes and warnings. The monitoring system surfaces these to you (or your installer) so issues can be caught early.

Advanced monitoring options

Third-party integrations

If you want to integrate your turbine data with home energy management systems (like Sense, Neurio, or Home Assistant), the inverter usually supports data export via MQTT, Modbus, or REST API. Your installer can advise on compatibility.

Cloud storage and analytics

By default, data is stored locally. If you want cloud backup or advanced analytics, providers like PV Output or Sunsynk offer cloud logging services (typically £5–20/month). These are optional.

Professional-grade SCADA

For multi-turbine installations or research purposes, you can deploy SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems that log high-frequency data (every second) and provide remote troubleshooting. This is beyond the scope of residential/small commercial installations but is available for large farms or industrial sites.

Data privacy and security

Local storage

By default, data is stored on the inverter or a local gateway device. It does not leave your site unless you explicitly enable cloud sync. This is the most private option.

Cloud sync (optional)

If you enable cloud backup, data is encrypted in transit and at rest. The cloud provider (HNordic or a third party) retains only aggregated, anonymised data. You retain all raw data on-site.

Data ownership

All data is your property. You can export it in standard formats (CSV, JSON) at any time. There is no vendor lock-in; you are not forced to stay with any monitoring provider.

Using monitoring data

Validation and troubleshooting

If your turbine is not generating as expected, monitoring data is the first diagnostic tool. Low generation during windy weather flags a mechanical issue. Zero generation despite wind flags an electrical problem. Good monitoring data accelerates troubleshooting.

Financial tracking

Export tariff income depends on how much electricity you export. Monitoring data shows exactly how much you have exported, letting you validate monthly payments and flag discrepancies with your tariff provider.

Energy optimisation

Historical data helps you identify when your home uses most power. If you see that most consumption is in the morning (heating, hot water), you might shift demand to wind-strong periods or pre-charge the battery at night.

Regulatory compliance

If you are exporting to the grid under a smart meter scheme (G99 in the UK, etc.), you may be asked by the DNO to provide generation data. Monitoring systems keep metered data that satisfies these requests.
